Women’s role in war to be documented

Posted on 14 April 2010

A parliamentary sub-committee was formed yesterday to collect information and write a complete history of women’s contribution to the Liberation War.

The sub-committee will prepare a detailed list of women who directly or indirectly contributed to the war in 1971.

Headed by Ruby Rahman, a ruling Awami League (AL) lawmaker, the three-member body was asked to travel across the country to gather information and documents on women’s sacrifice in the war.

The parliamentary standing committee on liberation war ministry at a meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban formed the sub-committee.

“To my knowledge, there is no complete history of our women’s contribution to the Liberation War. Even the 14-volume documents on the war does not have a complete picture of this,” chief of the standing committee Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star after the meeting.

Replying to a question, he said members of the sub-committee will first go through different research papers on women’s role in the Liberation War. They will also visit history department of universities to collect relevant information.

While visiting towns and villages, the sub-committee members may also seek cooperation of individuals and organisations who had earlier worked in this sector,” Rafiqul Islam said.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs AB Tajul Islam said filing a case against AL Lawmaker Moslem Uddin on charge of involvement in war crimes is under consideration.

“If he is found involved in war crimes, he will not be spared. War criminals do not have any political party,” Tajul Islam said.

In reply to a question, the state minister said the government has nothing to do if members of the public and freedom fighters on their own prevent Jamaat-e-Islami from holding meetings.
