A woman teacher of international relations at Jahangirnagar University on Thursday lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor, Shariff Enamul Kabir, against two of her male colleagues for ‘misbehaviour’ and ‘sexual harassment’.
Naureen Tabassum, lecturer of the IR department, met the VC along with 30 other women teachers and lodged the complaint in writing against Abdullahel Kafi, chair of the department and assistant proctor of the university, and Fazlul Halim Rana, lecturer of the same department.
Professor Nasim Akhter Hossain of the department of government and politics, said on behalf of the victims that they had complained against the two teachers for making amorous overtures to their female colleagues.
‘The victim [Naureen] has been harassed in many ways by the two teachers over last one year. But the authorities have not taken action against them though we complained against them many times over,’ she told New Age.
‘The authorities even remained silent after we first submitted a complaint on April 1,’ she added.
Some other women teachers of JU said they wanted security and a healthy environment at the university. ‘We want an assurance that no woman teacher will be harassed in future.’
‘You can easily understand the sense of insecurity among the female students when teachers themselves are not secure,’ they said.
Nasim Akhter urged the university authorities to immediately launch an investigation into the allegation against the two teachers and take action accordingly.
When approached, Abdullahel Kafi denied the charge. ‘The allegation brought against me is false.’
