Govt claims success in acid violence

Home minister Sahara Khatun said this to journalists after a meeting at the National Acid Control Council on Thursday.

She said that the council had been formed in 59 of Bangladesh’s 65 districts with a view to reducing acid terrorism.The number of acid throwing incidents has steadily come down from a high of 367 in 2002 to a low of 115 in 2009 according to the statistics of Acid Survivors Foundation.

Sahara said that the meeting had issued instructions to mobilise the councils to contain the incidence of acid violence across the country.

Shamsul Haque Tuku, the state minister for home, Dr Shirin Sharmin, the state minister for women and children’s affairs, Abdus Shobhan Shikdar, home secretary and other officials were present at the meeting.

A cheque worth Tk 2 lakh was given to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for the treatment of acid victims.

The home minister said the council had been allotted Tk 2 crore for the treatment of acid victims and increasing mass awareness against acid throwing.

Of the allotted money the council has already been given Tk 71 lakh.
