Acid thrown on woman over land dispute

Madaripur, Apr 17  Miscreants have thrown acid on a woman at Morelkandi village under Kutubpur Union of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur on Friday night.The victim, Helena Begum, 30, was admitted to Shibchar Hospital in a critical condition.

Police arrested a man at dawn on Saturday for being involved.

Nur Hossain, sub-inspector of Shibchar Police Station told bdnews24.com, “We went to the hospital immediately after hearing the news and talked to Helena Begum.”

He said that they had arrested a one Al-Amin, suspected of being involved.

Hossain said the police were trying to arrest the others.

Helena’s husband, Sheikh Shakawat Hossain filed a case with the Shibchar police against Samad Ghorami (40), Razzaq Chawkidar (35), Al-Amin (22) and Shahid Matbar (28).

Shakawat Hossain said that at around 8pm on Friday, five to seven criminals including Samad, Razzaq, Al-Amin and Shahid entered their hut and threw acid on Helena.

“Her legs, chest and throat were burnt.”

Shakhawat claimed that a land dispute had triggered the attack.
