The Alliance for Women Workers Rights (AWWR), a new organization to promote equal rights of women, was launched through a function Sunday held at the National Press Club.

The state minister for Labour and Employment Begum Munnujan Sufian formally launched the Alliance as chief guest.

She said “we have to work together to establish 50 per cent rights for women in every phases of our society”.

She quoted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that she always request members of parliament to keep a space for at least one woman in each and every committee.

“The vision of our alliance is working-women will be able to get equal rights and opportunities at their working places,” said AWWR chairperson Prof Ishrat Shamim.

She said the alliance will campaign for promoting women workers’ rights at the working places and the main focus areas will be to ensure equality in payment for work, minimum wages, ensure maternity leave, stop sexual harassment and stop discrimination at workers rights in Bangladesh.

Panudda Boopala, country director, ILO, Dhaka and Joyti Tuladhar, senior gender specialist bureau for Gender Equality ILO, Geneva were present as special guests at the launching ceremony.
