Trafficking in women and children

Posted on 11 May 2009

TRAFFICKING is a serious crime and involves human rights abuses. Thousands of women and children fall victims to the crime every year, causing them great harm. Despite international commitment to combat trafficking and all the writings against the crime, there still is a big gap between the cup and the lip. Many countries are still unable to ensure safety and security to their children and women. Bangladesh is no exception.

The criminal traffickers use Bangladesh as a source of trafficking to many countries. It is easy for the human traffickers to lure the poor and helpless children and women out of a country with the promise of work and a better future. But the promise ends up in gruelling torture, sub-human work, exploitation and even in deaths.

The government of Bangladesh is committed to stop the crime and ensure better life for its women and children, vulnerable to trafficking. The commitment is reflected in the laws it enacted to combat the crime. High-powered one-stop crisis centres, multi level monitoring cells and special courts have been set up for bringing the offenders to book. Vigilance has been reinforced in the international airports and seaports of the country. The people have been sensitised against the crime through mass awareness campaigns across the country.
