Distressed women, divorcees and young girls of the district are becoming self-reliant and making financial contributions to their families sewing handloom garments and marketing them. The women affairs department, social service department, youth development department and other government organisations, reputed NGOs like the RDRS, ASA, BRAC and dozens of local NGOs are playing vital role encouraging them in this sector. They are extending necessary support, training and inputs side by side creating marketing opportunities for their products, providing sewing machines and credit.
Production of readymade garments with handloom fabrics has been growing fast as more and more women, widows, divorcees and teenaged girls are becoming interested in adopting sewing as a prospective profession.
Government and NGO officials said that this profession would bring further success and help empowerment of women at the grassroots level.
These seamstresses are producing mainly garments like blouse, petticoat, chemiz, kamiz, salwar, scurf, maxi, baby wears, shirts, pants, fotua, caps and other readymade wears for men, women, babies, girls and people of all ages.
Housewife Rahima of village Rahmatganj under Royganj upzila in the district told the FE that she sews baby clothes and her husband sells them in the local bazars that fetches a handsome amount every month.
